Comments:What the hell do they mean by sustainable?! It's simple for bog rolls, you chop a tree down, make paper and plant another tree! LED lamps? Can't see how that works!?

What a load of old bollocks, there's nothing sustainable about it! At least fluorescent tubes can be recycled! When one of these is knackered, pretty much everything in it is only fit for landfill!

Looking at the specs on the Philips site. You'd still get a longer life and more efficient production of light from a long life triphosphor T8 running on electronic gear (79,000 hours vs 40,000 hours, 104LmW vs 100LmW). How many people would check that, rather than take their word that the LED tube is superior though? Shocked

I saw a couple of LED tubes in both a Superslim and a 70s T12 PP the other day! What a travesty!

This is an easy one, it sustains Philips`s profits! Wink

'Sustainable' is one of those bull5hit eco words such as 'carbon offsetting', 'carbon footprint' and 'climate change' which have unfortunately grown very popular in recent years. As Eliot states, these tubes are less efficient than some fluorescents and cannot be recycled easily.

These so called experts will never accept that the greenest form of lighting is an old fluoresecnt or discharge luminaire that has been well maintained over it's 20-40 year life and has only ever needed new lamps or starters! The energy and resources that have gone into producing and installing a fitting that lasts 20 plus years is easily offset during it's lifetime surely? At best, these lamps save such fittings from the crusher and will inevitably be replaced with proper tubes again a couple of years later!
