These were quite big in the 80s, so I`m wondering why they made them looks like something from the 50s?

This always takes me back to my childhood when I had the 2ft version in my bedroom with the ribbed diffuser. It was a birthday present in 1983 when I was 10. This one would also have had the diffuser as it has the end caps. When brand new they give a distinctive smell which they warn about in the manual. At the same period in the 80s, I constructed an 8w fitting from rainwater drainpipe, based on the light ideas fitting, as the main body is essentially a length of plastic pipe. Wish I still had both!

This one has the diffuser with it - I took it off so you could see the Thorn tube.. I'll take another pic with it on!

I used to have one of these in my bedroom when I was young. I remember it being fussy with which way round it was plugged into the bc holder.

I badly wanted the 2' twin version when I was around 6. Dad came home with a Philips SL*18 which I was equally chuffed with as it was the first time I'd seen one!

I was going to get a 2 foot twin version when Argos started to become big, wish I had of done now! Sad

LOL Argos sold them well into the 90s IIRC. That and the 4' single (with diffuser) and a 'lightweight' 40w circular with crystal shade!
