It's certainly very well engineered for what is effectively a one shot ballast!

my first fooling about with one of these was when I was about 13,i had a desk fan in my bedroom which was too fast for leaving on all night so I opened up the base and took the inner ballast of a dead SL9 lamp and put it in series with one of the fan speed settings and it worked a treat,i think it may still survive in my parents attic somewhere.
