I've seen the odd one of these over the years! Best example I've seen had grey lampholders and an Atlas 40w Warm White! I THINK they were made by Thorn for the domestic market and sold by Woolworths under their Winfield brand and possibly Argos too. Later versions had tombstone twist holders and side mounted square starters sockets with T8 Thorn Pluslux 3000 warm white lamps. A slim opal diffuser was also offered! A quality Ring Sunpack alternative! Very Happy Very Happy

It appears to be a Thorn Omega fitting - 5 footer! Adding a couple other pics...

Oh my! Never thought I'd see another one of these. Had a 4ft one in our attic. If it's the same fitting, the mounting plate is a small plate that "hooks" onto the body

Yes that's the one. I have one of these fittings and it is a bit on the rusty side!

My late grandparents had one of these in their kitchen. I remember it having grey lampholders. I replaced it with a more modern fitting with a diffuser and this got moved to the garage behind the house as an additional light. Sadly, when the house was sold in 2005 it got left behind. The garage has long been demolished.

There was a box full of the grey lampholders at Harrison's! Did your grandparent's fitting have the iconic black potted BLI choke? I imagine these fittings would also suit T8s nicely, despite pre-dating T8 power savers!

The one in my grandparents had a Thorn open coil ballast, finished in off-white. Quite a short ballast from memory. The Thorn pop-pack we had in our kitchen at the time had the exact same ballst in it as well.

According to the old 1970 catalogue this was originally known as the 'One Up' fitting for the domestic market, supplied with a slim opal diffuser and Warm White lamp. Mounting via a central backplate!
Slyspark   [Feb 27, 2017 at 12:19 AM]
Yes! it certainly had the central backplate!

Found one of these in a loft today, along with a Thorn Format 1x 75-85w SRS fitting. Both being replaced next week. Sadly the Format has a VERY yellowed diffuser thats broken.

Nice find SS! It appears these fittings were in production for quite a long time! From at least 1969, possibly earlier through to the early 80s. In the 1976 catalogue, it appears to have been replaced with the Homelite batten, effectively a PP with slim opal diffuser, but I'm guessing this was kept in production for the likes of Woollies and co. I once found a Winfield branded 4ft model that had a Thorn 36/40w choke as fitted to the late 70s/early 80s Pop Packs. This was back in 1990 inside an old burger van at the scrapyard! Shame the Format is past it, I'd still save it for bits tho!

I'd love to find a replacement diffuser for it and restore it, but I think the chances of finding a diffuser are slim at best, if not impossible! Might get stripped for parts, whatever I'll be keeping the SRS gear!
