Well standard SON lamps for general lighting can be used, I know people who use them. The spectral output of these is slightly different though, a bit more blue in it, better for promoting growth I believe! You usually switch to Metal Halide lamps for flowering though.
LOL these certainly aren't for ripening your tomatoes!
You can get other Lamps which are Just SON-T lamps whith enhanced Blues in the Spectrum such as the Sunmaster, Osram Planta, Philips SON AGRO, Sylvania Growlux and Iwasaki EYE Hortilux, etc, as Elliot mentioned you then need to sitch over to Metal Halide for Vegitation,
Have you guys seen a Side Silvered SON Lamp for Hoticulture Lighting I have a Artemis LUR400/Plant in my Collection.
Yes a Standard SON Lamp can also be used for Horticulture Lighting but withthe lack of Blues, but still work just as good. when out and about, especially in the summer, have a look around Street lights you will notice that weeds seem to grow quicker near street lights.
All the Best
