Comments:I used to see loads of these around in the mid 80's and I quite like them but wasn't sure who they're made by, since identified for me.... They were also very abundant around Heathrow T4 when it was built.

These bad boys are GEC! There are still a few remaining along the A40 westway towards London. Most of which have been replaced by Urbis SON units......

These are the GEC Z9565 (180w SOX model) they first came out in the late 1960's and were made in 3 sizes, they are as follows Z9545 for 90w SOX Z9555 for 135w SOX and Z9565 for 180w SOX Liverpool has some 90w and 135w sizes remaining which are slowly dissapearing for modern Street lighting, Also I have a Z9545 in my Collection

What about in exeter service station? There used to be some there!!!

Theres still one in use, (135watt), version, on the bridge, near Winsford station, here

I remember these being on the motorway in Auckland NZ when I was a kid. Didn't know they were GEC until recently. Adelaide in South Australia still has some. It was sold here up to the 1980's as the GEC 'Titan'.

I quite like these lanterns, theres only a handful of 135W versions left in my county though.. TBH I dont think DCC used that many anyway . There was a load in the Sunderland Area on the A690 but They were removed in 2006 for Irradiums, I could of got loads back then as I worked for them when they were took down! they were quite common in Sunderland, Also on the A1 Motorway they were common untill they Re did the A1 and bypassed all the roundabouts

Some of these left dotted around Birchwood!

Sadly, this lantern's days are likely to be numbered - they've started removing the columns with MA90's from the same junction on the A34 and putting in new ones. Here's the MA90's and the GEC's

Are you going to try and Rescue this Lantern and a few others Paul?
Paul   [May 22, 2012 at 04:56 PM]
I don't know how to go about it Danny, this junction is a few miles away from me and the changes happened while I was in hospital, I think. All I can do is drive by most days and if I see the crews doing the work, go and have a word. Confused I went and got another pic of this and it's sister lantern alongside, and the last remaining MA's.

Yeah You're best off trying to catch the lads that are doing the work.

Thats a shame paul, These are Nice fittings, There used to be a few around here, but unfortunately I only know of THIS installation about half a mile away from My place. The rest have now been Cosmo'd. BTW Paul, If you have a Column Door Key, Stick some Contact details inside the door on a piece of paper on the next lot of columns that are to be removed. and just write, Is there any chance This could be saved and a Number or Email. Its worked for me once or twice
Paul   [Dec 01, 2012 at 10:58 AM]
Interesting idea... could you not get 'done' for that? If not, I may do that!
Looks like a lone lantern there Danny...
Danny   [Dec 01, 2012 at 11:36 AM]
Na I wont get done for it as I know the guys, They'll just know to save it for me. so when I know this area is about to be Cosmo'd, Ill go down one sunday morning on my bike with my key and pop a little note inside... If you stick the note on the Cut out theyll have no option but to read it before pulling the fuse out lol

These were common enough in Ireland. Mostly were on curved brackets but casual replaced with Philips MA60 gear in base. Sad
