This is one of three I presently own; the other two are triple tube. This is pictured here on a 1.5 metre arm; the batten next to it is a Thorn 125w 8ft, to give a perspective of the size of this beast. A 5 foot 3x65w version was also made.

What a magnificent beast! Looks awesome lighting the garage! I don't suppose you know what the fluorescent lanterns were in 'Ramsay Street' do you Al? Wink They looked like single 4' 36/40w jobs!

Load these up with 84s or 83s and you've got the perfect city centre street lantern!

Thanks guys Very Happy . Tom, yeah that streetlight on Ramsay St would've been the GEC SL5034 Nepean 1x36w, coincidentally it also ended production in 1984 along with the Kuwellle range. Catalogue page here . It would be super bright with 840's which I haven't tried in this yet. Versalift, glad to make your day! Kev, yeah this is heavy, I don't have the 65w version yet although there's a couple at an airport near me I'm keeping an eye on.

So lucky to own a fluorescent street lantern! I do miss the fluorescent street lights, gone 28 years now where I live. They were 2x40w 2ft Quick start, though many had sadly become unreliable due to poor lamp earth contacts towards the end.

Rob, we still have loads of the 2x20w 2ft switch start versions here although they are getting replaced with junky CFL types with HF ballasts. FSB and Dan each have one I sent over to them. I have several dating back as far as 1968 that have only just been retired after 45 years of faithful service with the original ballasts, still work perfectly after nearly 200,000 hours of service.

Remote ballasts would've helped the weight issue big time! Wouldn't be any more complex than remote mercury chokes with the just lamps and starters in the lantern.

The ballasts in this aren't huge, the diecast aluminium canopy contributes a fair bit to the weight. See here for an internal pic of the three-lamper. This one is the same but with four ballasts.
