Comments: | This is a restored 2 x 8 watt road sign light. This seems to date from 1987. The ballasts are Tridonic. The lantern is seen here in a restored state. It did have a fuse for each tube circuit but these had become brittle following several decades of UV from the tubes so have not been reinstalled to the gear tray. |

Very much so Tom. My first mains fluorescent gear was from a sign light, I found a gear tray that had fallen out of a lantern when out for a bike ride with a school friend (also a lighting collector) when I was 9. I remember attaching a flex and a plug to it and putting it in a cupboard and switching on the socket with a long cane, terrified it was going to explode! It worked fine of course but I know if I had kids myself I wouldn't be happy about the doing that.

Amazing how many of us came by gear trays from road sign wreckage! My first set of gear was from a fallen traffic bollard! The old twin 8w vertical trays with a broken tube! I wired it up and it lit too, I was over the moon! Bought a pair of 8w Atlas tubes from the pet shop, didn't know what Grolux was until they lit! Dad bollocked me for having exposed live gear on the go and helped build a wooden box to house it in with an opal Perspex front! :woohoo:

This appears to be a very well made bit of kit. Like Tom, I often salvaged the twin 8w gear trays from the old metal traffic bollards. I don't have any of them now as Mum used to chuck out stuff like that from my bedroom when I was at school.

I also used to salvage the bollard gear trays, my friend and I would go out on our BMX bikes looking for bollards that had been knocked over! I still have a pair of 20w Optima ballasts from a bollard gear tray, bollards started using 2 x 20w in the early 80s.

Nicely done! It's gone from almost every sign lit by these to hardly any here in the last couple of years. Certainly very good quality sign lights!
