Comments: | I used to visit a supplier in Melton Mowbray that used to supply Melton council with 80w bc tubes for these lanterns also fitted in Ashby. This was back in the early 1970s. Photo taken from 2012 calendar. |

I bet this street looked lovely by night!!

Amazing i wonder how long these lovely old fittings stayed in use for? I know that there were still some 3X80W BC lanterns in use up until 1994?
I was only a kid when I had last seen any of these fittings in use but can't remember where. I do remember the mish-mash differant colour tubes being used in them.

there is a pic of Lothian Rd have seen they looked lovely now all gone very sad

Very nice, they kind of look like American half-pipers.

5 foot fluorescents were still in use at Telford in Shropshire as late as 1983.

Some post top 5ft fluorescents in York last time i was there

Being a fan of Fluorescent lighting it would be good to them back in use for street lighting with reliable gear of course!

Good idea Simon! I'm thinking 5' 80w T5s with Transtar 85w magnetic ballasts!

Wonder how long an 18watt 2 foot would last on a 36watt choke? like the old 2 foot 40watts
A few thousand hours I should imagine on a 4' 36W choke! They seem to last about 1000 hours on a 2' 40W circuit!

The area where I work the 2 foot 18 watters have just been replaced as one had just failed after about 5 years but they are lit 24/7
