The Hg-free SON lamps always have longer and somewhat thinner arc tubes than normal. When the mercury is taken out the lamp voltage falls. This can be partially offset by filling to a higher Xenon pressure, but not completely. Stretching the arc tube is the only practical way to achieve the correct lamp voltage.
