Comments:After I heard someone banging on about the importance of RCDs today it reminded me of this. The only form of earth leakage protection in this house! Consists of a double pole switch operated by a EM coil connected between the earth rod and frame of the installation. Thought it may be of interest.

Lol still quite a few of these about in domestics!! Problem is they are only 60A rated and as we know most places have 80-100A cut out fuses!

Yes they're not too uncommon still. Yes, our service fuse is a 60A so all good there. Other problem is that if another path to earth gets connected to the installation, like a gas pipe or something then they may not trip. We don't have any of those problems here though. Smile

The only RCD we have here is the outdoor socket in the garden! My Dad and Grandad re-wired the house in 1978!

Shocked Retro!, we don`t even have anything like this left at work now, EVERY board in our factory has be replaced with Hager stuff as of the Jul/Aug shut down.

Ours was installed 1988 as part of what was primarily a lighting rewire. The sockets and lights are on the same RCD, meaning that we occasionally get plunged into complete darkness! Neutral I wonder who really bothers to test RCDs monthly, given that it ussually means having to go round resetting clocks etc after.

I test mine the right way, either electrocuting myself, or cutting through wires and crossing the earth! Laughing Laughing Laughing

The majority of the wiring in this house is original, from the 60s. Some very poor work was done by a 'master builder' sometime in the 80s adding aditional sockets to the kitchen and front room, one of which is connected to the lighting circuit! Fucking imbecile! Mad

There's another of these, quite a bit older that was a bit further down from this. redundant and long disconnected. I've just removed it this morning and given it a good clean and polished the bakelite. Will see if it still works later!

Haha nice one Rich! I need to be more careful as there's no shock protection here, although I've had a few! Rolling Eyes

Na most places hardly ever test RCD/RCBOs, I was working in a nursing home not all that long ago where another one of my work mates was doing the fixed wiring test, he pushed the test button on a old federal electric RCBO, next thing I was plunged in to darkness as the RCBO exploded and popped one of the 100A fuses feeding that dist board!
