Album name:SuperSix / My Files
Manufacturer:Thorn Electrical Industries
Comments:Came from a very well used and unfortunately damaged Atlas Super Five. As you can see though the majority of the cathode still seems to be packed full of emitter!

Great photo! Awesome design, no wonder these tubes lasted for donkey's years! Braided cathodes are still mentioned in the 76 catalogue!

Excellent pic Eliot! Not only are these cathodes braided but just look how many coils there are; What a contrast to modern Sylvania's little 'sticks'. I've always wondered how these tubes fare alongside the Osram Liteguards?

Most Super Five tubes I've seen feature the anode wings and even bare filaments! I think Thorn introduced these cathode shields around 1972?

Yes they're a fantastic design, far better than any design used today! I don't think Thorn really promoted these enough, while they did have a small feature on it in many of the catalogues, they still only gave the tubes a rated life of 7500 hours! The same as standard coiled coiled lamps. The US patent for the braided design says life is estimated to be 2.5 times longer though!

If anyone has any Thorn SOX lamps it's worth having a close look at the beehive electrodes as they did use braided designs in some of those too. They were also used in the MBF lamps for a while however they never mentioned that in any catalogues!

1972 I believe it was for the cathode shields!

Did they ever use the braid in SLI lamps?
