Comments:A must for any collector, the classic grey based Philips SL18. I had my first one in 1985, bought from Woolworths. It came with a survey sheet to fill in. I tried using it in an anglepoise lamp though that wasn't very successful due to the weight (545g). The first time I saw one was the early 80s in the porch of a Church. It fascinated me and very nearly didn't stay there!

LOL Rob! You stepped back from temptation! ROFL

Lovely! The SL*18 with BC cap was my first CFL when I was about 12 years old. Glad you resisted the temptation, the Vicar would not be impressed! Smile

Would be almost as bad as stealing the church candles lol! I badgered my parents for the twin 2' Light Ideas Quickstrip (as seen in Argos and Woolies!) until Dad came home with one of these beauties! Same style box too! Not quite the BC plug in fluorescent fitting I had wanted but I was blown away! First one I ever saw too! And it was mine! This would've been around 1982-3.

Must have been an early one, Tom. Easy to forget how over engineered even the packaging on these was. Very little chance of them breaking in shipping. Bet the packing cost more than many current lamps do!
Rob_TDCi   [Feb 07, 2014 at 12:04 AM]
There is another piece of hexaganol card inside that keeps the lamp securly in place and has some instructions and specs printed Zel. Some of that sealed plastic packaging that many things come in now can be annoyingly difficult to get into if you don't just happen to have a knife or sciccors handy. I had a single 2ft Light ideas plug-in fluorescent with diffuser for my birthday in 1983 Tom!

Yep. The actual shipping boxes are well sturdy too. Have a full box of SL*9s here of a similar era.

Lovely, I have one just like this but the box is tatty in comparison (was like that when I bought it in 1992, made in 1982 so had been on the shop shelf for 10 years). I also have two boxes of six of the 9w BC version that I imported from the UK a couple of years ago, those are pristine.

I think we've discussed this before but did an 86-6000K version exist for the warmer climates? I'd bloody love to see one if they did!
Andy   [Feb 09, 2014 at 11:30 AM]
Yes, a daylight version of the SL lamp would be amazing!
Dez   [Feb 09, 2014 at 03:29 PM]
yea they did make 6000K SL lamps most were of the 3erd gen desighn but a few erly ones were of the second gen
Paul   [Feb 09, 2014 at 08:02 PM]
I think I would get moist if I saw a 6000k SL! ROFL
Alan_M   [Feb 10, 2014 at 12:51 AM]
I've never personally seen a Philips 6000°K SL here in Aus although there was a Chinese SL knock-off with electronic ballast sold here a few years ago that was.

I think I've mentioned this before but if Daylight CFL's are hard to find over there and anyone wants some, let me know prior to middle of April. Would be Philips.
Paul   [Feb 10, 2014 at 01:44 AM]
Well, if you could get hold of a 6000k SL I'd be interested please Al!
Alan_M   [Feb 12, 2014 at 02:50 AM]
Lol yeah I would be too Paul, sorry no can do on one of those, was referring to the current crop of CFL's.
Paul   [Feb 13, 2014 at 01:17 AM]
Aw well, not to worry! Thanks for the offer Al, I would like to take you up on a couple of Daylight Philips 'sticks' if that's OK? Do you by any chance have any Amber T12 lamps over there at all? I would kill for one of those LOL - only colour I don't have in my collection!
