LED domination :(

Comments:Even the humble, friendly glowing mains neon indicator is no longer safe from the march of the LED! This is the mains indicator on a new kettle I bought today. Was expecting the flickery, warm orange glow of a neon when I switched it on but instead was treated to a flickery red LED glow.

Tell me about it! My kettle's got one too!

My one has a bright blue one!

My kettle has one too! Wonder if and when we'll start to see them on wiring accessories?

I have had LED mains indicators on recently purchased time switches. It's not a completely new thing in itself, it's just they seem to have become more common over the last 12 months! That said, our work kettle gave up the ghost as they do every 3 months with the use they get, and the new one has a nice blue neon in the switch.

For once the old kettle didn't need replacing because of the element tripping the RCD, it was just falling apart, the lid hinge had broken and the seal around the lid had gone meaning it wouldn't switch off.

Normally start tripping the RCD when they get boiled dry by some idiot. They are probably better off with a ZIP HS003!

At least it's red and not blue for a change! Dreading the day LEDs find their way into accessories as Eliot mentioned! Or other neon territory like four way extension leads and illuminated rocker switches!

We had a kettle with them INSIDE!, it was blue when not on, then lit the water red as it boiled it!

No way!!! Surely there is sweet FA difference in power consumption between a neon and an LED? it can't be that a neon is inefficient is it? Now this really does piss me off. Is there a ban or is it the LED band waggon doing the rounds?

Either way I'm sticking with the cheapo £5 kettle (exposed elliment) i got from B&H about 3 years ago... Apart from the neon not working (Now fixed (lose wire)) it's kind fo still going strong.

I'm not sure what the benefit is, the mains plug in timer I have which also uses an LED, has a much higher current resistor in series with the LED that gets quite warm compared to a Neon.

Hot components = early failure... ROFL

It's the resistor that gets quite warm, there was even a brown scortch mark on the white plastic!
